Abstract

Symptomatic problems in the cervical and lumbar spine that are related to degenerative processes of discs and do not respond to conservative treatment are increasingly treated by artifical disc replacement as an alternative to spinal fusion. Current evidence demonstrates that in terms of patient relevant outcomes total disc replacement is not superior to fusion. After both interventions, many patients still face problems. As many trials are ongoing, re-evaluation at a later date will be required.
