This report is the first update of the systematic review on "Leadless pacemakers for right ventricle pacing" prepared in March 2016. Leadless cardiac pacemakers are miniaturised, self-contained intracardiac devices that can be implanted entirely inside the right ventricle of the heart. The expected benefit is the avoidance of complications associated with external pulse generators or with transvenous leads required in conventional pacemakers.
There are no controlled trials comparing leadless pacemaker systems to conventional single-chamber pacemakers. Results are only available from single-arm studies, but long-term results are missing. Therefore, current evidence is still not sufficient to prove that leadless pacemakers are as effective but safer than conventional pacemakers.
